These are some recordings from the experiments carried out on the musical agent system. Human participants were asked to play excerpts from Canto Ostinato (Simeon ten Holt) with an unseen partner. This partner was either
- another human (PvP)
- a recording of another human (Recording)
- a completely straight rendering of the notes (Straight)
- the system copying the expressive attributes of the player exactly (Mirror)
- the system trying to be clever about relating its output to the human (Reason)
NOTE: these recordings aren't supposed to sound *good*, they are experimental data. In particular, the task was unfairly challenging to the pianists, so there are frequent pauses and wrong notes, and times when the two "players" are not in time with each other.
The participants were then asked to rate the interaction using a series of questions, relating to interactivity, expressiveness/competence and general quality.
