Field Recording
This page is a record of some of the field recordings I've created. So far they are all created with a Zoom H4 and homemade contact mics and hydrophones. The sounds are only processed to remove noise introduced by the recording equipment, and occasionally EQ'd to bring out certain noises.
Geolocated Molecules
This is a quick mashup, to create an augmented reality layer of molecular models for the PMR2011 Hackfest in Cambridge.
Musical Act Experiment
These are some recordings from the experiments carried out on the musical agent system. Human participants were asked to play excerpts from Canto Ostinato (Simeon ten Holt) with an unseen partner. This partner was either
- another human (PvP)
- a recording of another human (Recording)
- a completely straight rendering of the notes (Straight)
- the system copying the expressive attributes of the player exactly (Mirror)
- the system trying to be clever about relating its output to the human (Reason)
NOTE: these recordings aren't supposed to sound *good*, they are experimental data.
ChaoDependant
Chaodependant
ChaoDependant investigates the use of technology to explore invisibly structured spaces, in particular the attraction and repulsion of magnetic fields. A pendulum hangs from the roof, with a magnet encased in glass as the bob. A circular base supports a collection of glass pods containing magnets, sensors and lights.
(with Owen Green and Agelos Papadakis)
TruthTable
TruthTable at the Lighthouse
The TruthTable is a large multitouch surface, used for accesssing and aggregating of web searches in an exploratory way. It uses social knowledge from the web to create links and associations between different ideas, and then display media relating to them, all in a playful and accessible manner. It was created as a project with Informatics at Edinburgh University, in particular Jon Oberlander and Richard Brown. A refined version (shown left), with Lisa Mackenzie and Sam Booth, was displayed as part of the Senses of Place exhibition at The Lighthouse.
Andybox
A project with Artlink Edinburgh, looking at using technology to improve the quality of life for differently able people. In this case we were working with Andy, who has very limited mobility, and little vision, but a really strong sense of music and rhythm. Working with Alison Stirling and Steve Hollingsworth we created a customised music player adapted to his needs.
AgentBox
The AgentBox was created to allow a human "Conductor" to manipulate a group of musical agents in a fast and intuitive manner. By creating a tangible interface to a musical middleware system, human participants can shape the music being played without needing a high level of musical experience
